When Unbidden showed up i went from having a tiny puny 40k fleet to an massive 250k fleet something XD I was just having fun trolling the theocrats for the whole game but then the unbidden showed up and i went oh shit and started researching like mad until I got myself an state of art armada and kicked the unbidden out of my galaxy and back onto the streets where they belong. Then the object of their hatred changed from me to one of my raised from primitive civ into space age vassals. We was having repeated wars against an theocratic civilization of angry space cats who wanted me proselytized, naturally I objected to the space cats. Then I upraised two primitive civilization to space age and they became my vassals.
Then one of my friends started an federation and invited me. We was very different to each other but that didn't get in the way because we traded with each other so very much. But we fought off everyone who wanted a slice of us. It was an balkanized region with a bunch of small to medium powers with me being an small power.
I've only played stellaris on launch but I was able to survive as a hodge podge dictator for life that ruled a tiny slice of galaxy and only reason i still existed is because I was friends with alot of powers surrounding me.
